The House of Sunstrider was the former ruling house of the Kingdom of Quel'thalas. Founded by the first High King of Quel'thalas, Dath'remar Sunstrider, the family led the kingdom of elves from their inception and headed the creation of the mystical Sunwell on the Isle of Quel'danas. Ruling over the kingdom of the High Elves, the family suffered a substantial amount of losses during the invasion of the Scourge in the Third War, including King Anasterian Sunstrider.

Following the destruction of Silvermoon City, the family was led by the last known remaining Sunstrider, Prince Kael'thas Sunstrider who was away aiding the Alliance in the ruins of Dalaran. After repeated racist encounters with the Grand Marshal, Othmar Garithos, Kael'thas led his people away from the Alliance and under the employ of the half demon Illidan Stormrage and left for Outland. In his stead, Kael sent the magister Rommath to advise the appointed regent lord Lor'themar Theron until his eventual return home.

However, swayed by demonic powers, Kael'thas went under the employ of the Burning Legion and was empowered by the demon lord Kil'jaeden. After his defeat in Tempest's Keep, Kael'thas returned home to Quel'thalas with his men and marched into the city of Silvermoon. Rather than returning as their king, Kael'thas seized his former gifted Naaru, M'uru, from the people of Silvermoon violently then set up his base on the Isle of Quel'danas to use the power of the Sunwell to summon Kil'jaeden into this world.

With their prince lost to madness, the people of Quel'thalas along with the various forces of Azeroth and the Shattered Sun Offensive laid siege to the island and killed Kael'thas, displacing and finally ending the dynasty of the Sunstriders. Despite this, no one has risen to take up the mantle of High King, not even Lor'themar, who many believe would be perfect for the position. Notably, the House's crest continues to be used by the Kingdom even after the downfall of the Sunstriders.
